President’s Prizes

The 2006 Annual Meeting once again produced some excellent papers, presented both orally and in poster form. As is our custom the Branch continued to encourage its student members by offering two prizes for the authors of what, in the opinion of a small panel of judges, were considered to be the best of each. Once again, the decision was hard to make and, without detracting in any way from the other authors, the President was delighted to present a framed certificate and a cheque for £100 to each of the following two student authors at the close of the meeting:

Best poster:
Dr Ramone Alvarez, Roslin Institute (Edinburgh) - below:
“A stochastic model of egg production in broiler breeders”
Co-authors were A Springbett and P M Hocking.

Best oral presentation:

Ashleigh Bright
“A non-intrusive method of assessing plumage condition in commercial flocks of laying hens”
Co-authors were T A Jones and M S Dawkins.

Student Summer Vacation Scholarships 2006

It was also recently been announced that the two 2006 Scholarships, each worth £1000, have been awarded to:

Daina Domahidi of The University of Glasgow Veterinary School. Her summer project will be “ Database mining to discover genetic markers for use in candidate gene association studies for the antimicrobial properties of eggs”, and to:

Judy Ryan of Harper Adams University College. Her project is “The effects of ultra-violet light duration and vitamin D content in the diet on egg quality in laying hens”.
We look forward to their reports which will be considered for inclusion in the 2007 Annual Meeting. We would encourage all students to apply for one of next year’s Awards, which will be announced in our Autumn Newsletter.
