Spring 2008 - Annual Meeting and AGM

1st April

WPSA (UK Branch) Annual Meeting and AGM:
The Spa Pavilion, Scarborough, 1 and 2 April 2008

Returning to Scarborough, where many successful Branch Annual Meetings were held from 1993 to 2000, before our move to  York and then to Southport, we look forward to a new era of Meetings organised by a new Committee. Many will remember the Spa Complex in Scarborough, which has been recently totally renovated but, in any case, you may view it at www.scarboroughspa.co.uk. Situated at the end of the Promenade and right on the seafront it looks across the bay and out into the bracing North Sea.

Access by road and rail is easy, the A1 being not too far away and then the A64 leading quickly from York into Scarborough, which also has its own railway station connecting to the East Coast Main Line at York.

BSAS will be meeting as usual alongside us in the Spa Complex and, again as usual, starting one day ahead of us. You will, by now, have received the full Programme and Application Form for the Meeting which this year includes no less than 29 original communications plus an oral introduction to 11 WPSA poultry posters with BSAS having a further 15 or so. WPSA members attending the Annual Meeting were reduced last year but we are hoping for a resurgence as we return to a familiar venue.

WPSA delegates are invited to join BSAS at 9.00am on Tuesday 1st April for the Sir John Hammond Memorial Lecture given by Professor Mike Goddard of the University of Melbourne “Molecular genetics for livestock improvement – brave new world or false dawn?” Our own meeting starts at 10.30 am and the first morning commences with a variety of original communications on nutrition and lighting and a poster presentation session. After lunch the joint WPSA/BSAS Session looks in detail at “The impact of biofuels on livestock production” with three papers one covering the US experience and then one paper each on poultry and pigs looking at the use of novel co-products. This is followed by a further session of original communications before the 2008 Gordon Memorial Lecture which will take place at 5pm, when Prof Minghan Choct of the University of Armidale California will discuss “Managing gut health through nutrition”and this will be followed by the Gordon Memorial Reception and then the Branch Annual Dinner at 8pm, all in the Spa Complex.WPSA (UK Branch) AGM

The Annual General Meeting of the Branch will take place at 8.30 am on Wednesday 2 April (full papers are sent to all members with this Newsletter). Members need to take this opportunity to contribute their views to the running of the Branch and this year we will be electing a Branch Treasurer and up to five new members of Council. All members are strongly urged to attend. You will also be receiving further information on the arrangements for the 17th European Symposium on Poultry Nutrition which will be hosted by the UK Branch and held in Edinburgh in August 2009 and the UK Branch bid to host to the 2016 World’s Poultry Congress in Glasgow.

Please come along to the AGM, early as it is in the morning, and be involved in the running of the Branch.

The second day will continue with a further session of original communications and a new Industry Session. We look forward to meeting members old and new for a really good meeting.

President’s Prizes

The two 2008 President’s Prizes, each worth £100 with a framed certificate, will be awarded at the conclusion of the Meeting to the two young scientists who are judged to have presented the best paper and the best poster submitted for the Meeting.
