Spring 2007 Newsletter : Annual Meeting and AGM

WPSA (UK Branch) Annual Meeting and AGM
The Royal Clifton Hotel
Southport and Theatre and Floral Hall Complex
3 and 4 April 2007

Making a break from Yorkshire, where our Annual Meeting has been held for the last fourteen years (eight in Scarborough and six in York) we are this year moving across the Pennines to Southport on the north west coast of England. With good access to the M6 motorway and from Liverpool John Lennon Airport, it looks like a good choice for 2007. BSAS will also be meeting in Southport, as usual starting one day ahead of us, and their meeting will take place in the Theatre and Floral Hall Complex. However, due to some building work at this venue, it has been decided to hold the main part of the WPSA Annual Meeting, the registrations, the Gordon Memorial Lecture and the Annual Dinner, at the Royal Clifton Hotel, which is only a very short walk away along the Promenade. However, the BSAS Hammond Memorial Lecture, attended by many WPSA members and this year given by Sir Ben Gill, and the Joint WPSA/BSAS Session “Novel approaches to the control of avian influenza” at 11 am on the final day, will all be held in the Theatre and Floral Hall Complex.

You will, by now, have received the full Programme and Application Form for the Meeting which this year includes no less than 19 original communications and, hopefully, 21 posters. WPSA members attending the Annual Meeting were reduced last year but we are hoping for a resurgence at the new venue.

Starting at 10.15 am on Tuesday 3rd April, the first day will consist of a variety of original communications on nutrition, welfare and genetics, poster presentations and also an invited paper on “The use of genetic selection to improve the welfare of poultry

The 2005 Gordon Memorial Lecture will take place at 5pm, when Prof Kirk Klasing of the University of California will discuss “The care and feeding of the immune system of poultry”and this will be followed by the Gordon Memorial Reception and then the Branch Annual Dinner at 8pm.

WPSA (UK Branch) AGM

The Annual General Meeting of the Branch will take place at 8.45 am on Wednesday 4 April (full papers are sent to all members with this Newsletter). Members need to take this opportunity to contribute their views to the running of the Branch and this year we will be electing/re-electing a Branch Treasurer and up to two new members of Council. All members are strongly urged to attend. You will also be receiving further information on the arrangements for the 29th Poultry Science Symposium to be held in Edinburgh in July on the topic “ Biology of Breeding Poultry”. Please come along to the AGM, early as it is in the morning, and be involved in the running of the Branch.
Final papers

The second day will continue with a further session of original communications before we move up the road to join BSAS for the joint session before departure.

Delegates are this year reminded to book their own accommodation at the Royal Clifton Hotel.

Please give the Programme Committee, under Dr Paul Rose, in his final year as Chairman, the support which they undoubtedly deserve for having put together another excellent programme.

President’s Prizes
The two 2007 President’s Prizes, each worth £100 with a framed certificate, will be awarded at the conclusion of the Meeting to the two young scientists who are judged to have presented the best paper and the best poster submitted for the Meeting.
