Summer 2005 Newsletter : Student Prizewinners
President's Prizes
The 2005 Annual Meeting once
again produced a record number of excellent papers, presented both orally
and in poster form. As is our custom the Branch continued to encourage its
student members by offering two prizes for the authors of what, in the opinion
of a small panel of judges, were considered to be the best of each. Once
again, the decision was hard to make and, without detracting in any way from
the other authors, the President was delighted to present a framed certificate
and a cheque for £100 to each of the following two student authors
at the close of the meeting:
Best oral presentation:
Athanasios
Pappas, SAC Auchincruive (pictured below):
"Supplementation of maternal diet with selenium and polyunsaturated fatty
acids affects the incorporation of selenium in the tissues of the progeny."
Co-authors were T Acamovic, N H C Sparks, P F Surai and R M McDevitt.
This award was particularly apt as Athanasios has diligently manned the WPSA reception
desk at the Branch Annual Meeting in York for the last three years and is shortly
returning to his native Greece on completion of his course at SAC.
Best poster:
Ros Mayne, Roslin Institute (Edinburgh) (pictured below):
"The effects of litter type and quality on turkey foot pad dermatitis."
Co-authors were R W Else and P M Hocking.

Student Summer Vacation Scholarships 2005
It was also recently been announced that just one 2005
Award, worth £1000, has been awarded to:
Robert McMillan from the University of Nottingham to investigate " The
long term developmental effects in broilers of short term feeding of conjugated
linoleic acid: a future alternative to restriction feeding?"
We look forward to his report which will be considered for inclusion in the
2006 Annual Meeting. We would encourage all students to apply for one of next
year's Awards, which will be announced in our Autumn Newsletter.
