Summer 2005 Newsletter : Secretary's File
Membership
As is often the case at this time of year we have to report a long list of
members who have decided not to renew their WPSA membership, often because
they have retired or are leaving the poultry field or, in the case of students,
because they have moved on. This year is no exception, but it is also a pleasure
to be able to report another big increase in recruitment to the Branch since
our last Newsletter n February. We therefore offer a warm welcome to the following

Congratulations....
.......to WPSA UK Branch Council member Professor Christopher Wathes on his recent appointment as Chairman of the Farm Animal Welfare Council. Other members of FAWC include Stephen Lister of Crowshall Veterinary Services (also a member of WPSA UK Branch Council) and George Hogarth, Production Director of Aviagen. It is gratifying to know that poultry issues will be well understood within the new team.
Prof Wathes will also shortly be transferring from Silsoe Research Institue, which will be closing, to the Royal Veterinary College, University of London, to establish a new Animal Welfare Group.
........congratulations also to long serving UK Branch member Mr Arnold Elson, who retires from full time active service with ADAS later in the year, on his appointment as Chairman of WPSA European Working Group 9 (Poultry Welfare).
.........and more congratulations go to the Incubation and Fertility Research Group (WPSA European Working Group 6 - Reproduction) on achieving its 30th Anniversary. This active Group is now largely driven by enthusiastic UK Branch members Glenn Baggott and Charles Deeming and it celebrates its Anniversary by holding a special meeting at the University of Lincoln on 6/7 September (details appear here).
New Books
The third edition of Summers and Leesons "Commercial Poultry Nutrition" is now available from University Books, Guelph, for $75USD (email unlike@sentex.net). Since it was last printed in 1997, there have been many major changes and the book has been expanded by some 20% to 420 pages.
