Summer 2004 Newsletter : Secretary's File
Membership
It is always a pleasure to be able to report, in these uncertain times, a big increase in recruitment to the Branch. Since our last Newsletter in February, two new initiatives have resulted in no less than 21 new members joining the Branch. For the first time our Annual Meeting Registration Form offered the opportunity to join and to take advantage of reduced delegate rates for members. Also long-standing member Dr Gordon Rosen very generously offered to pay the first year's membership of those joining at the Annual Meeting, resulting in 12 new members, mostly students. Very grateful thanks to him and also to Janet Pemberton of Harper Adams University College for her very successful chivvying up of potential members.
We therefore offer a warm welcome to the following new members, who have joined the Branch since the last Newsletter:
- Miss Stacey Bush, Harper Adams University College.
- Miss Judith Capper, Harper Adams University College.
- Mr Robin Creighton, Braintree Veterinarian.
- Miss Rebecca Croxall, ADAS Gleadthorpe.

Regrettably, however, an equal number of members have left the Branch because of retirement, moving out of the poultry industry or simply failure to pay their annual subscription:

It is particularly sad to say farewell to Tom Whittle who was a life member of the Branch for many years, was Branch Secretary/Treasurer from 1981 to 1992 and then, when the two jobs were divided, continued as Treasurer until 1994. Tom's son Duncan ells us that Tom is now in a nursing home in Ayr and we all wish him well.
Nat Bumstead
For many years a member of WPSA, Nat Bumstead of the Institute for Animal Health at Compton passed away on April 19 after a long illness. Nat was a world leader in research on the genetics of avian infectious disease and published the first full genome DNA-based linkage map of the chicken. Nat was not only an innovative and pioneering scientist but also one of the nicest people to know. He will be sorely missed and our condolences go to his family, friends and colleagues at IAH.
