Membership

By now all members will have received their copies of the 2001 Membership Directory of the Association which will be immensely useful to all of us. There will inevitably have been changes in individual membership details, previously notified to me, which did not make it into the Directory. This is due to the time lag between preparation and final publication and we apologise for any of these that have occurred. They will be corrected next time! It is important to try to keep our records up to date, so please remember to notify me of any changes of status or personal details as they occur.

All sectors of the poultry industry, trade, education and research, are still experiencing a chill economic wind and inevitably this results in some losses in WPSA UK Branch membership as people retire, move on or move out. It is most encouraging that the number of new members joining the Branch very nearly balances these losses, but we still need all our members to be on the lookout for potential recruits in order to keep our numbers up.

We are delighted to welcome the following new members, who have joined the Branch since our last Newsletter:

Student grants/bursaries

The Worshipful Company of Poulters’ Charitable Trust is, once again, offering grants/bursaries to help students who are involved with poultry related research. They like to assist those who either have an exciting project and/or are finding funding difficult. These can be awarded at any level from undergraduate to PhD.

The Worshipful Company was founded in the 15th Century to promote the interests of the poultry industry in London. Over the years it has evolved to become one of the most prestigious livery Companies of the City of London. Its members now come from all walks of life, professions and industries and have considerable connections in the fields of finance, commerce and government. Recently the Poulters’ Company has decided to reaffirm its connections with the poultry industry and to promote education and research. The emphasis is on encouraging young people in the poultry industry by offering financial support and guidance where necessary. To this end they are initially starting with two projects:

i) to identify and encourage a student at PhD (or similar) level, who is involved in education or research in poultry, by offering a bursary of £1000 per annum to assist their work.
ii) to provide an annual prize of £500 to an individual under the age of 30 who has made a major contribution in the areas of research, development, innovation or other related matters connected with the production, promotion or welfare of poultrymeat, eggs or avian game. The recipient may not be the beneficiary of the Poulters’ bursary. It is hoped that this prize will be awarded for the first time in December this year in London.

The Trust will assess and interview applicants, hopefully making the financial awards prior to the academic year commencing October 2002. Further details and applications should be made as soon as possible to the Chairman of the Poulters’ Trust Mr Robert Haynes, 40 Westgate, Louth, lincolnshire, LN11 9YD, tel 01507 602707, fax 01507 606162 or email robert.haynes@chickandegg.com

WPSA Federation of European Branches - Working Groups

It is hoped that the long awaited Working Group No 12 (Physiology) will hold its inaugural meeting at the European Poultry Conference in Bremen in September under the Chairmanship of Dr Shlomo Yahav from Israel. UK Branch Representative will be Dr Malcolm Mitchell from Roslin Institute. This completes our representation on the nine current Working Groups, full details of which were published in the Spring 2001 Branch Newsletter. Reports from these Groups now feature regularly in this Newsletter and I would remind Representatives to let me have their contributions after their Groups have met.
