President’s Prizes

In a letter to the President following the 2002 Annual Meeting, Prof Trevor Morris wrote:

“…My other reflection on the meeting as a whole was that the standard of the papers was very high, whether presented by an old hand or by one of the youngsters. The experiments were interesting and well thought out and the presentations were extremely skilful - a far cry from the days when graduate students often lacked confidence and some of their supervisors turned up with illegible slides. … I came away full of confidence that, although poultry science is inevitably a shrinking trade, there is a great deal of young talent coming on stream. No doubt, many of those young people will find employment in research or industrial posts unconnected with poultry, but I don’t think that matters very much. They will have been well trained and they will contribute much to the WPSA during their early professional years.”

The UK Branch of WPSA continues to encourage its student members by offering two awards for the best presentations at the Annual Meeting. This year’s winners were Pollyanna Taylor from Harper Adams University College…………

Undergraduate Summer Vacation Scholarship 2002

It was announced at the Annual Meeting that the 2002 award, worth £800, will go to Carol Walker of Harper Adams University College, to help her with her summer project to examine the effect of water supplementation with organic acids on the incidence of dirty eggs and their microbial contamination in commercial laying hens. This research project will form part of Carol’s BSc honours degree course. Well done, Carol.
