Spring 2001 Newsletter : WPSA (UK Branch) Annual Meeting and AGM

A new venue for 2001

The superb campus of the University of York provides the setting for the 2001 Annual Branch Meeting. Easier to reach than Scarborough, it will save delegates up to 2 hours travelling each way, is close to the A1 and also on the main East Coast main railway line, 2 hours from London and 2.5 hours from Edinburgh. Conference facilities at the University are excellent and on-site accommodation is of a good standard. All facilities are within very short walking distances of one other and are situated around the lake in the main campus. Once again, our Meeting will coincide with the BSAS Annual Meeting, and also this year with the ISAE, and we will have the added benefit of everyone being on one site. There is also much to see and to do in the fine City of York.

Annual Meeting

You will, by now, have received the full Programme and Application Form for the Meeting, which will commence at 10.45 am on Tuesday 10 April with a session of five submitted papers on Environment/Behaviour, covering a range of sub-topics. Following lunch three excellent invited speakers will major on the currently very important topic of "Alternatives to Antimicrobials", covering the effects of the various products, solving the problem of necrotic enteritis, and the Swedish experience of removing antimicrobial growth promoters. Three submitted papers on Nutrition follow the tea break and the first day's formal sessions will close with the Gordon Memorial Lecture, which this year will be given by Professor Ian Duncan of the University of Guelph, who will challenge his audience to think about "Poultry Welfare: Science or Subjectivity".

This will be followed by the Branch Annual Dinner, which is always a pleasurable occasion, not to be missed.

WPSA (UK Branch) AGM

The Annual General Meeting of the Branch will take place at 8.40 am on Wednesday 11 April in Room L005 of the Exhibition Centre. This is an important event in the Branch's year and is your opportunity to contribute your views to the running of the Branch. A number of new initiatives have been introduced this year and ideas are always welcome to help us to remain an attractive and vibrant association. This year we have three Committee Members to elect and we also need to confirm our hard-working Treasurer, Dr Paul Hocking, in his post. Please come along to the AGM, early as it is in the morning, and help us to help you.

Final papers and posters

The last day of the Meeting will then continue with a further series of five short submitted papers on Nutrition and will conclude with six short papers on Physiology.

Throughout the Meeting there will be opportunities to view an excellent range of 28 Posters, nearly double the number of the previous year.

Congratulations to Dr Paul Rose and the Programme Committee on what promises to be a most interesting two days.

We hope to see you there.
