Autumn 2006 Newsletter : 29th Poultry Science Symposium

“Biology of Breeding Poultry”
23 – 25 July 2007,Surgeons Hall, Edinburgh

Continuing its tradition of hosting a series of high quality biennial single topic poultry symposia, the WPSA UK Branch is pleased to announce the early arrangements for the 29th Symposium, to be held in Edinburgh next July --a flyer is enclosed with this Newsletter.

The organising Committee under the Chairmanship of Past President Dr Paul Hocking is now well on the way to completing the detailed programme for this important event and arrangements for poster submissions will be published in our Spring Newsletter, to be published in January, and on the WPSA UK Branch website.

Past symposia have attracted world wide interest, with both speakers and delegates from many overseas countries. Held in Bristol in September 2005 the topic “Avian Gut Function, Health and Disease” proved to be a sound choice and attracted not only a record number of delegates but also a record of over 100 from overseas, representing no less than 26 different countries!

Paul Hocking says “ Breeding poultry have changed out of all recognition in the last 50 years and this will be the first time that the biology of layer, broiler, turkey and duck breeders has been emphasised in an international symposium.”  Divided into nine separate sessions the programme will cover the whole range of factors that influence the behaviour, management and productivity of all the major species of poultry. Running from midday on Monday 23 July and finishing at midday on Wednesday 25 July to allow delegates ample traveling time within the three day schedule, the programme will also include a dedicated poster session and a splendid Conference Dinner.

The chosen venue, Surgeons Hall, is home to the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, founded in 1505, and houses an important pathology collection with examples dating from Roman times to the present day.  The conference centre is a state of the art lecture theatre within an ancient building. Full details  of this impressive complex can be viewed on their website www.surgeonshallcomplex.com.
