A full report on the World Congress held in Istanbul in June appears in Volume 60, September 2004, Number 3 of the World's Poultry Science Journal, which all members will have already received. Suffice it to say that around 1500 delegates and invited speakers from over 90 countries, including many from the UK, attended this event.

You will also already have read that Prof Rűveyde Akbay (Turkey) was elected World President for the next four years, with Prof Edir da Silva (Brazil) as Senior Vice-President and a strong team of Vice-Presidents including Prof Colin Whitehead from the UK (see below). Dr Piet Simons (The Netherlands) will continue as Secretary and Assistant Treasurer and Dr Francine Bradley (USA) will continue as Treasurer and Assistant Secretary.

UK Student Travel Awards

Continuing its tradition of encouraging students to take an active role in poultry science, and also honouring its pledge to the now extinct NDP Fund (long ago absorbed into the WPSA UK Branch account) to use its funds for similar objectives, the UK Branch offered travel awards to students participating in the Youth Program of the Congress. It was therefore pleased to be able to provide some assistance to Michelle Lewis from Harper Adams University College and to Athanasios Pappas from SAC Auchincruive to travel to Istanbul and to take part in the WPC. Congratulations to both of them - we hope that they enjoyed it and that it provided a relevant part of their education.
