Summer 2009 Vacation Scholarship Awards
WPSA/Genesis Faraday Vacation Scholarship Award to
research organisations
The Genesis Faraday Partnership and WPSA are pleased to announce a call
for 2009 WPSA/Genesis Faraday Vacation Scholarship Awards as a means to encourage
undergraduates into research in the field of farm animal genetics
and genomics. A competition for one Summer 2009 Vacation Scholarship
Award is now open.
Purpose
The Vacation Scholarship is intended to provide promising undergraduates with
'hands-on' experience of research during the summer vacation and to encourage
them to consider a career in research.
What does the student get?
The Scholarship is available for a minimum of six and a maximum of eight weeks'
work and carries a stipend of £200 per week. The scheme
aims to provide practical work experience in an environment that will match
the student’s area of study or interests. Long term it will help career prospects
for young people.
Who can apply?
Research Institutes and Universities that are paid up members of Genesis Faraday
Partnership[1] can
apply to host a Vacation Scholarship. The project must be in the field of
Genetics and Genomics as applied to poultry breeding and health. The host
institution will receive a grant of £2,500 (including any applicable VAT)
from WPSA (to cover student salary (approx £1600) and project costs (approx
£900)). Organisations allocated an award will be responsible for recruiting
the student including any costs of advertising. It is not necessary to have
identified a student at the time of application, but if a student has indicated
an interest, then details of the student may be provided at the time of application.
The Allocation Process
In a process scrutinized by the Genesis Faraday Research and Development Committee
(RDC), a group comprising the Genesis Faraday Director, Technology Translators,
the Chief Executive of BSAS and the Chairman of the RDC will decide
allocation of the Vacation Scholarship Awards. Proposals will be assessed
according to the following criteria:
- Relevance to the Genesis Faraday remit; Genetics and Genomics of all domestic animals as applied to Animal Breeding and Animal Health, and within this remit, relevance to poultry breeding and health.
- Research Partner’s track record.
- The likely value of the training opportunity for the student
- Quality of the project proposed
